How Loan Affordability Works in China

Chinese lenders size personal loans the same way banks everywhere do: from your capacity to service the instalment. This calculator works backwards from income rather than forwards from a price tag — you give it your monthly income, your existing monthly obligations, the rate you have been quoted and the term, and it tells you the largest loan whose instalment fits inside a debt-service ceiling you set.

The debt-service ratio you control

The debt-service ratio (DSR) is the share of monthly income that can go to debt payments. Many Chinese banks work from an informal benchmark around 50% for combined obligations, but each lender applies its own internal rules and treats income documentation differently — some count bonuses and housing fund contributions, some do not. The field is editable precisely because the ceiling is the bank's decision, not a published law.

What the Results Mean

The Available Monthly Payment is what remains of your income after the existing obligations you listed and within the ceiling you set. The Affordable Loan Amount is the principal whose annuity instalment exactly equals that payment at your rate and term. The interest figures show what that size of loan costs over the full term at the rate you entered — a reminder that maximising the loan maximises the interest too.

Use take-home income, not gross

Enter the income that actually lands in your account. Gross salary overstates capacity by the roughly 10.5% employee social insurance share plus income tax withheld — the Take-Home Pay Calculator next door gives you the exact number for your city's contribution rates.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Chinese banks decide how much I can borrow?

Lenders combine your verified income, existing obligations shown in your credit report from the PBOC credit reference centre, and their own internal debt-service and scoring rules. There is no single public formula — this calculator mirrors the standard capacity method so you can anticipate the outcome before applying.

What debt-service ratio should I set?

The pre-filled 50% is a common bank benchmark for combined debt payments as a share of income. If you want a conservative buffer for rent, housing fund contributions and living costs, set it lower — 30–40% leaves meaningful room for shocks.

Why does a longer term raise the affordable amount?

The instalment on any given principal falls as the term lengthens, so a fixed monthly capacity supports a bigger loan. The trade-off is interest: the Total Interest figure grows as the term extends, which the results panel shows directly.

Does this calculator know my bank's rules?

No — and neither does any calculator. Bank policy, income counting rules and risk grades differ by institution and change over time. Treat the result as your own capacity check, not a lending decision.
