How Take-Home Pay Works in South Africa

Your take-home (net) pay is what is left of your gross salary after three main deductions: SARS income tax (PAYE), UIF, and any employer-specific deductions such as medical aid or pension contributions. This calculator focuses on the two universal ones — income tax and UIF — so you can see at a glance how much of your gross actually reaches your bank account. The figures use the SARS 2025/26 tax-year brackets and rebates, which the calculator pulls directly from the shared configuration file so they can be updated the moment Treasury moves them.

How Is Income Tax Calculated in South Africa?

South Africa uses a progressive marginal-bracket system. Each slice of your annual income is taxed at a rate that rises from 18% on the first R237,100 up to 45% on income above R1,817,000. After the bracket calculation, SARS subtracts a primary rebate of R17,359 from the annual tax. If you are 65 or older, an additional secondary rebate of R9,599 applies; if you are 75 or older, an additional tertiary rebate of R3,206 applies on top. The calculator applies the correct rebate automatically based on the age you enter.

What Is UIF and How Much Do I Pay?

UIF (the Unemployment Insurance Fund) is a statutory social-security contribution. As an employee you pay 1% of your gross monthly remuneration, and your employer matches another 1% on top — so 2% in total reaches the fund. Crucially, UIF is capped: only the first R17,712 of monthly earnings is UIF-able, which means the maximum employee UIF contribution is R177.12 per month. Earnings above the ceiling are not UIF-able, so on higher salaries the UIF line stays flat at the cap.

What Does This Calculator Not Include?

This is a PAYE-style estimate, not a full SARS assessment. It does not include medical aid tax credits, retirement-fund contribution deductions under section 11F, travel allowances, company-car fringe benefits, or any other personal adjustments that can materially change your final tax position. Use it as a quick check on what your employer should roughly be deducting each month — not as a substitute for your annual SARS assessment or the advice of a registered tax practitioner.
