S$20,000S$400,000

The advertised price of the car — in Singapore this includes the COE (Certificate of Entitlement), which gives 10 years of vehicle ownership and moves with demand.

S$

Cash toward the car. The MAS rules cap the loan at 70% (OMV S$20,000 or below) or 60% (above) of the price including COE.

A trade-in, or the PARF/COE rebate (paper value) if you de-register an existing car — it offsets the price like a down payment.

How Car Loans Work in Singapore

Singapore is the most expensive place in the world to own a car, and the loan maths has to reflect that. The advertised price already bundles the COE — the Certificate of Entitlement that grants 10 years of ownership and is auctioned monthly, moving with demand. Singapore car finance is commonly quoted using a flat interest rate — interest charged on the original financed amount across the whole term — with an Effective Interest Rate (EIR) disclosed alongside for comparison; reducing-balance (monthly rest) loans also exist, so the Rate Type selector lets you model either side by side. What makes Singapore distinctive is the regulatory frame around the loan, which turns on the car's Open Market Value.

The OMV rule — 70% or 60%, seven years in both bands

MAS vehicle financing rules cap the loan by the car's OMV — the customs valuation of the vehicle itself, before COE, registration fees and taxes. At or below S$20,000 OMV, you may borrow up to 70% of the purchase price including COE; above S$20,000 OMV, the cap drops to 60%. The maximum tenure is 7 years in both bands — it does not shorten when the OMV crosses the threshold, only the loan-to-value does. The calculator reports your loan-to-value against the correct band as guidance and flags a tenure that exceeds the limit — it never blocks the input, because seeing the consequence is the point. At the example inputs — a S$150,000 car with S$25,000 OMV, S$60,000 down — the financed S$90,000 sits exactly at the 60% limit. Priced flat at the illustrative 4.00% over 5 years, that loan costs S$18,000 in interest (S$1,800 a month, with an estimated EIR of about 7.7%); the same 4.00% on a reducing balance costs about S$9,450 — the rate type matters more than the headline percentage.

What a car really costs you

The all-in figure at the bottom of the results panel — down payment, cash fees and total repayment — is the honest cost of the financed purchase, and it is still not the whole story. Owning the car adds road tax, insurance, fuel or charging, servicing, and eventually the decision at the 10-year COE mark: revalidate (paying the prevailing COE or a prorated PQP), de-register and collect any PARF/COE rebate, or sell. PARF and COE rebates on de-registration — the paper value — also offset a new purchase like a down payment, which is why the trade-in field accepts them. None of those running costs are modelled here; the loan is only the entry price.

Assumptions worth knowing

The model holds your entered rate constant and assumes instalments are paid exactly on schedule — late fees and early-settlement conditions vary by lender and sit outside the page. Singapore car loans are often advertised using a flat interest rate. A flat rate and a reducing-balance rate are not directly comparable at the same percentage. Check the rate type and Effective Interest Rate quoted by your lender — not every lender or product uses the same structure, so match the Rate Type selector to the quote you actually have. Where a lender quotes a monthly rest rate, choose reducing balance, which amortises directly on the outstanding balance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is OMV and where do I find it?

Open Market Value — the customs valuation of the car itself, before COE, registration fees and taxes. It is published in the car's specification sheet and on the OMAR/LTA transaction history for registered models. OMV decides your loan band: 70%/7 years at or below S$20,000, 60%/7 years above — the 7-year maximum tenure applies in both bands.

Why is the car price so high compared with other countries?

Because the advertised price bundles the COE — the Certificate of Entitlement, auctioned monthly, granting 10 years of ownership. COE prices move with demand and can rival the car's own value. The calculator works on the full advertised price because that is what the loan rules measure.

What rate should I enter?

Enter the annual rate your bank or finance company quotes — and check whether it is a flat rate or a reducing-balance (monthly rest) rate, then set the Rate Type selector to match. The 4.00% pre-filled is an illustrative example only — NOT a current Singapore market rate. A flat rate and a reducing-balance rate are not directly comparable at the same percentage, so compare the Effective Interest Rate (EIR) your lender discloses — the calculator shows an estimated EIR for flat-rate quotes.

Can the loan exceed the MAS limits?

The calculator lets you enter anything — the limits are shown as guidance, not enforced, so you can see what an over-limit structure would cost. In practice a lender will not grant a loan above the LTV cap for the car's OMV band or beyond the 7-year maximum tenure, so adjust the down payment or term accordingly.

Does the calculator include running costs?

No — road tax, insurance, fuel or charging, servicing and the eventual COE revalidation decision are all outside the loan maths. The all-in cost covers the financed purchase only. PARF/COE paper value from de-registering an existing car can go in the trade-in field, since it offsets the price.

What happens at the end of the 10-year COE?

Three options: revalidate by paying the prevailing quota premium (or a prorated sum), de-register and collect any PARF/COE rebate, or sell the car with its remaining entitlement. The loan should be fully repaid well inside the COE period — the 7-year maximum tenure exists partly to guarantee that.
